Call at house
A courtesy call at the farm / house of the land owner is required.
Browgill Cave, the resurgence of Calf Holes, is on land owned by Paul Hallam at High Birkwith Farm. Permission to enter or exit here is very unlikely to be granted. However, it is worth noting that Browgill Cave is only a short, discrete walk down the river to meet the public footpath at God's Bridge.
Calf Holes is not on High Birkwith land and access there is no problem, and requires no permission.
Should you exit Calf Holes at Browgill Cave for whatever reason, it is only a few hundred metres discrete walk along the riverbed to the public footpath at the bridge. If you are confronted during this short journey, be courteous, avoid confrontational dialogue and continue your journey to the public footpath immediately.
Parking is available for free at Alum Pot green lane at Selside and then a 3km approach by footpath along Coppy Gill via Low Birkwith Farm.
Alternatively CNCC has an arrangement with Low Birkwith Farm to allow cavers to park there for a fee. The track to Low Birkwith Farm is on left just before High Birkwith. Park around the back of the stone barn where there is a black honesty box attached to the wall. Pay £5 for cars or £15 for minibuses into an envelope or similar (visitor to provide) and note your registration number on the front and post it into the honesty box. No need to call at the farm, but say hello if you see or meet anyone. From there it is less than 1 km to most of the High Birkwith caves by joining the footpath alongside Coppy Gill which passes Low Birkwith Farm (no need to walk back up the farm track).
This cave is NOT on access land. Click here for more information.
