Devis Hole Mine Caves (Swaledale & Arkengarthdale)
Issued: 22 May 2018
Natural cave is reached via extensive and complex mine workings. The current entrance was excavated in the 1970s and is low, potentially wet, unstable and at high risk of collapse. Enter only with those fully aware of the dangers of old mines. Various anchors of uncertain vintage and unlikely integrity on shafts.
Following extreme floods in late July 2019, we have been informed that the entrance to Devis Hole has been totally covered over/filled by debris. Work is planned to restore it but may take some time. Check back here for further updates.
Please note that grid references are correct to the best of our knowledge however are often taken from old books so they may not be absolutely accurate and are shown simply as a guide.
Devis Hole Mine Caves is not equipped with any BCA approved anchors. Any placed anchors should be treated with extreme caution.
