Hazards and Warnings
We have received notice of recent hydrological changes, including a new inlet becoming active upstream of the main entrance. This means that traditional rules-of-thumb about water levels (e.g. judging water levels in the cave via the water levels at the entrance) no longer apply.
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Occasional scour tests are performed at Scar House Reservoir upstream of the Goyden/New Goyden/Manchester Hole system. This involves the release of water from the reservoir and can cause serious downstream flooding including the caves. Cavers are strongly advised to check the dates of future scour tests online (www.yorkshirewater.com/about-us/reservoir-scour-testing/#nidd), with the relevant dates being for Scar House Reservoir, typically twice per year. There is also a large blue sign at the start of the road to Scar House Reservoir warning of the next scour test date and the risks to anyone in the caves. Finally, be aware of the possibility that extremely strong winds can cause overtopping if the reservoir is very full which can cause flood pulses downstream.
