(Darnbrook & Cowside)
Hazards and Warnings
When inside the cave PLEASE replace the cover on the entrance. There is a rope knotted into the lid. Please, if possible, locate the boulder with an anchor at the bottom of the entrance, and clip this onto the rope to firmly hold the lid down to make the entrance safe for the local residents (and the cat).
A sudden rise in water levels could flood the crawl to MacColls Rift, making entry (or exit) impassible. If the river is flowing at the farm, the crawl is likely to be rather wet; only pass this crawl if confident such high water levels are dropping rather than rising.

Access
Permit required
Advanced permission is required.
This cave has unusual access problems, the entrance being located immediately under Darnbrook Farm (about three miles south west out of Arncliffe, at the bottom of the steep hill). It is not on access land, and the tenants at the farm typically park on top of the entrance!
The CNCC hold an access agreement with National Trust dated 2010, revised June 2024, which allows up to eight permits per year to be issued to BCA members, including named individuals and clubs.
Cavers attending the meet must show the permit and proof of BCA insurance to the tenants at the farm.
Parking location will be supplied with the permit, although on occasions, the tenant at Darnbrook Farm may make an alternative request (or invite you to park closer) so it's always worth calling in before changing into caving gear.
The landowner and tenant need to be notified in advance of which of the available dates cavers will be turning up, so please try to arrange your permit as much in advance as possible to avoid disappointment and reduce inconvenience.
This cave is NOT on access land. Click here for more information.
Permits are issued by Dinny Davies. Here's how you can get a permit...
