Robinsons' Pot (Darnbrook & Cowside)
Issued: 8 November 2017
A sudden rise in water levels could flood the crawl to MacColls Rift, making entry (or exit) impassible. If the river is flowing at the farm, the crawl is likely to be rather wet; only pass this crawl if confident such high water levels are dropping rather than rising.
Issued: 29 May 2022
When inside the cave PLEASE replace the cover on the entrance. There is a rope knotted into the lid. Please, if possible, locate the boulder with an anchor at the bottom of the entrance, and clip this onto the rope to firmly hold the lid down to make the entrance safe for the local residents (and the cat).
Access
This cave has unusual access problems, the entrance being located immediately under the kitchen window of Darnbrook Farm (about three miles south west out of Arncliffe, at the bottom of the steep hill).
Parking location will be supplied with the permit, although on many occasions, the tenant at Darnbrook Farm (who is extremely friendly) will invite you to park much closer, so it is worth calling in to show your permit, before parking up and getting changing.
The National Trust have agreed to allow a permit to be issued for the first Saturday of May/June/July/August/September and the third Saturday of May/July/September, meaning a total to eight permits available per year.
Permit applications can be made by email or by post.
The landowner and tenant need to be notified near the end of each month of what permits have been issued for the following month. Therefore the latest date for which a permit can be issued will be approximately one week before the start of the month. More advanced notice is appreciated if possible.
