Introduction to Paperless Surveying (3 day course, split over 3 months)

This three day BCRA Cave Surveying Group course (spread across three months) will teach complete beginners about paperless surveying up to a standard where they can produce a straightforward paperless survey and be able to output a pdf map of a cave along with survex files and files to view using Google Earth.

After completing the full course, participants could expect to have enough knowledge and skills to be able to attend one of the more advanced courses planned by the Cave Surveying Group.

This course will involve training on using equipment underground in a nearby cave, but will be predominantly classroom based.

Course Aim: To help people be confident in working with the DistoX and a PDA in collecting survey data and then using Therion to process the data to output maps, 3d models, Survex files and files to view using Google Earth.

Day 1 (24/3/18)

  •  Brief Overview Of what we can achieve using paperless surveying techniques.
  • Explanation of the kit used & calibration.
  • Survey roles and methodology.
  • Underground session.
  • What to do with the data.

 Day 2 (21/4/18)

  • Introduction to Therion.
  • Getting the data into Therion.
  • Creating maps and other output.
  • Solving problems.

Day 3 (19/5/18)

  •  Adding more data to build bigger surveys.
  • More problem solving.
  • Joining more surveys to build bigger area maps.
  • A simple file structure to store your data.

Mentoring will be available between each day session and after the course to help with any problems that may arise as you try out the new techniques.

 

To book a place on this event: sign up on the CNCC website and post a cheque for a £10 deposit (payable to Council of Northern Caving Clubs) to Marion Holloway, 118 Silk Mill Drive, Leeds, LS16 6PX. This cheque is your deposit and will be held until you have attended all three sessions, at which point it will be destroyed. Your deposit must be received within two weeks of your sign up date (after this is received you will receive an email confirming your place on the course). Deposits will not be refunded in the case of cancellation or non-attendance.
